Why Electrolytes Matter Much More Than Plain Water

Every trekker hears the advice: “Drink plenty of water in the Andes!” While hydration is essential, many well-intentioned hikers make a dangerous medical mistake: they chug four or five liters of pure, unsupplemented water every day while sweating profusely up mountain staircases. The surprising result? They develop worsening headaches, nausea, and severe muscle cramps.

The Danger of Exercise-Induced Hyponatremia

When you hike at high altitude, you lose fluids in two distinct ways: through sweat as your body works hard on steep inclines, and through rapid, heavy breathing in the dry, thin air. Sweat and breath carry away not just water, but vital electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride.

What Happens When You Only Drink Pure Water?

If you replace those mineral losses exclusively with plain water, you dilute your blood’s remaining sodium levels. This condition, known clinically as hyponatremia, causes water to move into brain cells, triggering throbbing headaches, weakness, and confusion that mimic or worsen Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

The Ideal Daily Hydration Strategy:
Follow the 50/50 rule. Of the 3.5 liters you drink daily on the Inca Trail, ensure that at least 1.5 to 2 liters contain electrolyte powder or tablets. Save plain water for meal times when you are consuming salty, mineral-rich soups prepared by the camp chef.

  • A dull, frontal headache that does not improve after drinking a full liter of water.
