Sanctuary Rules and Prohibited Items

What You Can Legally Bring Inside the Machu Picchu Sanctuary

Entering Machu Picchu after four days of hiking has strict baggage limits. Understand bag sizes, prohibited gear, and luggage storage rules.

After hiking 43 kilometers over high mountain passes, passing through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) feels like the ultimate victory. However, as you step down toward the iconic postcard viewpoint of Machu Picchu, you transition from a remote backcountry trail into a strictly regulated UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park. Knowing the park entrance rules prevents frustrating confiscations at the turnstiles.

The 40x35x20 Centimeter Backpack Rule

Park regulations enforced by the Ministry of Culture state that no backpack exceeding 40 x 35 x 20 centimeters (approximately 20 liters capacity) may enter the archaeological complex. Large multi-day backpacks (40L, 50L, or 65L) must be stored at the paid luggage storage facilities (guardarropa) located right outside the main park entrance gate.

Items Strictly Prohibited Inside the Citadel

Common Confiscation Risks at the Gate

  • Drones and UAVs: Flying drones inside the entire sanctuary is illegal and results in equipment confiscation and heavy police fines.
  • Professional Tripods and Selfie Sticks: Monopods, camera stabilizers, and selfie sticks are banned because they block narrow stone pathways and can damage ancient masonry.
  • Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles: Disposable plastic bottles are forbidden; travelers must carry reusable aluminum or hard plastic bottles.
  • Trekking Poles with Metal Tips: Poles are only permitted for elderly or disabled hikers and MUST have soft rubber protective caps attached.
  • High-Heel Shoes or Hard Metal Spikes: Only soft-soled hiking boots or athletic shoes are permitted.
