Resumen

Inca Trail 6 Days to Machu Picchu

Enjoy an unforgettable 6-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu via the Salkantay Trek. This version of the classic trek is truly unique, with the first two days following a common Salkantay trail. On the third day, you will embark on a less-traveled trail that connects to the Classic Inca Trail, even allowing you to hike part of it.

The trail takes its name from Mount Salkantay, which at 6,271 meters is higher than any mountain in North America. Along the way, you will see breathtaking blue lakes, stunning glaciers, cloud forests and rainforests. The final stretch of the journey features a more typical Inca Trail ecosystem, with lush green vegetation and numerous archaeological ruins. This route perfectly combines Peru’s two most popular routes.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1

Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa

We leave Cusco early in the morning and head to Mollepata, where we begin our journey to Soraypampa. Our team of muleteers and mules will be waiting for us. After a delicious tea and dinner in our dining tent, prepared by our expert cook, we settle in for the night.

With the help of a bilingual guide and camping equipment, we set off. Mules carry our luggage and saddle horses are available if necessary. Today we gradually ascend to the Inca Chirihasca pass, reaching an altitude of 5,000 meters. As we hike up the right side of the impressive Salcantay mountain, we enjoy spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. We then descend to our campsite at Sisaypampa.

After a hearty breakfast, we begin our hike, passing through the village of Huayllabamba and entering the main Inca Trail. We will walk through an Andean cloud forest until we reach our campsite in Huayllabamba, where we will join the Inca Trail group.

We rise early to begin our hike to the Warmiwanusca pass. As we advance along the Inca Trail, we enjoy some of the best views of the Salcantay mountain range. We arrive at Pacaymayo camp, where we will spend the night.

Another early start to explore the Inca sites of Runkuracay and Sayacmarca. We will stop at Chaskicocha for lunch before continuing on to Phuyupatamarca camp, where we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Machupicchu mountain range.

After an early breakfast at 3:00 am, we begin our descent to Wiñayhuayna and then to the Sungate to see the city of Machupicchu. We will walk for approximately 4 to 5 hours from our last campsite before exploring the city with our tour guide. Afterwards, we have free time to explore the area before taking the train back to Ollanta and the bus back to Cusco.

Recommendations

Recommendations for 6-Day Salkantay & Inca Trail Trek:

Here are essential recommendations to help you thoroughly prepare for this challenging high-altitude expedition:

  • Train in advance: This trek involves multi-day hiking over high mountain passes reaching up to 4,900 meters (16,076 ft). Cardiovascular workouts, stair training, and weekend day hikes with a backpack are highly recommended 2–3 months prior to arrival.
  • Acclimatize in Cusco: Spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco (3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley prior to starting the trek. Rest, drink plenty of water, and avoid heavy meals during your first 24 hours.
  • Stay hydrated: High altitude accelerates dehydration. Drink at least 3 liters of water or electrolyte-enhanced fluids each day. Coca tea and muña tea are traditional Andean remedies that assist acclimation.
  • Pack appropriate layered clothing: Andean temperatures range from freezing below 0°C at high camps to warm, humid conditions in the cloud forest. Bring thermal underwear, fleece layers, a breathable windbreaker/waterproof jacket, and broken-in waterproof hiking boots.
  • Carry cash in Peruvian Soles: There are no ATMs in the mountains. Carry small denominations (PEN 20, 50) for souvenirs, hot showers at select camps, and tipping your guide, cook, and porters/horsemen.
  • Protect against sun and insects: At high altitude, UV radiation is intense. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, UV sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, and reliable insect repellent with DEET for the lower cloud forest sections.
  • Passport requirement: You must carry your original, valid physical passport at all times. Passports are checked at the trailhead checkpoints and the entrance to Machu Picchu.
